On Abortion and Protecting the Human Embryo, Before Voting Check the Facts
The comments below reflect the most up-to-date position on where the main political parties stand on right-to-life issues.
There are pro-life people in most parties even those whose policies may be adverse. However, the attitude of the party itself is very important as the party decides policy.
Stances of the Parties
Fine Gael
Fine Gael recently reiterated its commitment to the protection of the unborn child. Fine Gael has also opposed the use of European Union funding for research that destroys living human embryos and has promised to consider legislation to protect the human embryo. In the European Parliament, Fine Gael is a member of the European People’s Party (EPP), which has a good record of defending the right-to-life.
Fianna Fáil
Fianna Fáil has publicly declared its opposition to legislation allowing abortion in Ireland. Some members of Fianna Fáil’s Parliamentary Party also oppose destructive stem cell research on living human embryos.
At European level, however, the Fianna Fáil leadership has decided to join ALDE, the Liberal grouping in the EU Parliament. This grouping strongly favours radical policies including abortion and human embryonic research. Recently, a Fianna Fáil Minister and Minister Mary Harney voted in favour of EU funding of destructive embryo research.
The Green Party
The Green Party allows its elected members to vote according to their conscience on sensitive issues such as the right-to-life.
The Labour Party, Sinn Féin and Socialist Party
The Labour Party, Sinn Féin and the Socialist Party are committed to making abortion available in Ireland. They refuse to distinguish between necessary medical interventions in pregnancy and induced abortion (where the life of the unborn child is directly targeted).
